The Federation and Attecor in Dixotomia, Explained

4 MIN READDEEP MATRIX

The Federation is the human state behind Dixotomia's setting: about 150 billion people across many worlds, run on a system called Attecor that assigns every citizen a profession. Karna is one distant corner of it, and the game's opening mystery makes more sense once you know how the Federation treats people.

This guide sticks to world background and is spoiler-free.

What is the Federation in Dixotomia?

The Federation is a hyper-centralised state of roughly 150 billion people. Its worlds and its citizens are sorted, labelled and assigned. Large corporations appear throughout the lore: Westinghouse Armory (the weapons monopolist), Hailong Industries, United Hyperspace, Morphology Freed and Medcorps.

The lore enjoys the absurdity of this. Reynor's standing grievance is that a state this centralised, with a single arms monopolist, still manages to run a hundred incompatible calibres of ammunition. The state looks orderly on paper, and the hundred calibres are a small crack in that picture.

What is Attecor, and what does it do?

Attecor is the Federation's attestation apparatus, run by what the lore calls the Attestation Corps. Its job is simple to state and enormous in effect: it decides what each citizen does for a living.

  • It assigns professions. Every citizen receives one.
  • It uses genetic passports. Residents of the Solar System carry them, so Attecor can predict the best career for each person.
  • It was meant to grow. The plan to extend the same system to a thousand worlds was cancelled when it exceeded the available computing power.

The lore's own joke sums up its reputation: anyone who has been assigned even once by the Attestation Corps stops visiting fortune tellers. Once the machine has told you what you are, there is little left for a fortune teller to say.

What happens when Attecor says no?

The best way to understand Attecor is through the people it shaped. Three dossier-level examples from the cast:

  • Otto Stern. He graduated from medical school, but Attecor refused him a licence, judging his interests to fall outside medical ethics. He drifted into underground practice, then radiophysics, then cosmogeology, and he later picked Karna partly because it had no medical oversight. The profile of Otto Stern covers his background in detail.
  • Edward Price. Attecor offered him a life he found suicidally boring.
  • Reynor Adams. He was born in a Mars colony ghetto, and his grandfather's shoulders routed him into a cadet corps and then the Fedarm Special Academy in Adelaide.

Three people, three ways a decision made far away shaped a life, and all three ended up on Karna.

How are worlds and people colour-coded?

The Federation labels worlds and people with colours, and the labels carry real consequences:

Colour Applies to What the lore says
Red Worlds Poor and restive, such as Samaris and Moncada
Orange A person's status Limits the work you can do
Blue Passports Highly desirable: Reynor's ex left him for one

Red worlds matter to the story. Tibet Innovations smuggles "volunteer colonists" out of the red zones as contraband labour, and according to every inspection report it has done so for fifty years.

What is Fedarm, and what is the Psychofac?

Fedarm is the Federation's military. Its branches, as the lore lists them:

  • Assault Infantry Corps and Guards Corps. Reynor served eight years in the Assault Infantry.
  • The Perimeter. Described as safe and boring.
  • The Black Legion. The elite.
  • The Ghost Legion. Destroyed on the red world Moncada, which is how Edward Price's career in Fedarm ended.

Fedarm also runs a Special Academy in Adelaide. It includes a women-only Parapsychology faculty known as the Psychofac, with an emblem of a Psi trident on an open book wreathed in sage leaves. Rumour says its cadets read minds, can make you jump out of a window, and that only one in ten finishes.

What does the Inspectorate Directorate do?

The Inspectorate Directorate sends federal auditors to check corporations in assigned colonies. Their powers include lawful interception of private correspondence, which makes them the Federation's closest thing to a check on a company like Tibet Innovations.

The inspector's manual adds a rule: an inspector should arrive attracting as little attention as possible. So the Federation's check is a person with the legal right to read private correspondence and a manual telling them to keep a low profile. For the corporation on the other side of that arrangement, read Tibet Innovations: the corporation that owns Karna.

How does the Federation compare with Tibet Innovations?

The Federation is the state and Tibet Innovations is the company, and Karna sits where the two overlap. A side by side view shows how different their reach is:

The Federation Tibet Innovations on Karna
Scale About 150 billion people across many worlds One planet, held as a quasi-fief
What it controls Professions, passports, Fedarm and the Inspectorate The mine, the refinery, the research lab and a private army
Its checks Federal auditors under the Inspectorate Directorate Its own security service, with weak outside oversight
Its record A plan to extend Attecor to a thousand worlds, cancelled Contraband labour, per fifty years of inspection reports

Why does the Federation matter in a VR shooter?

Dixotomia is a single-player VR sci-fi horror shooter, so the Federation rarely arrives as a lecture. It arrives as the reason Karna is the way it is. It supplies the setting's quiet cruelty: a machine that decides your life, planets treated as inheritance, and inspection reports that get filed while little changes.

Those ideas are the backbone of the game's tone, and Dixotomia's themes explores them in full. If you want to see how they play out, the game is on Steam, with a free demo on Steam and itch.io for a first look.
