Guns or Vampiric Powers in Dixotomia: How the Two Styles Work
Dixotomia gives you two playstyles and lets you mix them. One is technology: sci-fi firearms, a force shield and gadgets. The other is vampiric abilities that come from an infection in your left arm. Each has its own deep upgrade tree, and the two trees are incompatible, so you cannot have everything.
The idea the game is built on is simple: technology on one arm, something else on the other.
What is the technology style?
This is the soldier's side of Reynor "Ron" Adams. The Technology tree is named after the kit you carry:
- Pistol, Rifle, Assault Rifle, SMG, Machine Gun and Shotgun
- Plasma Cannon and Grenade
- Spark, an experimental weapon
- Armour, Visor and Sensor
That is 12 abilities, and they cover weapons, protection and gadgets. Your suit also carries a force shield. Because Dixotomia is made only for VR and lists Tracked Controller Support, you handle these weapons yourself with your own hands.
What is the vampiric style?
The other side comes from the infection. In the lore it is an infection that spreads by a bite, and it takes hold of Ron's left forearm early in the story. The powers it gives you are vampiric, and they live in the Vampire tree.
The Vampire tree has 14 abilities: Mark, Pain Orb, Hypnosis, Blood Subjugation, Blood Needle, Dark Camouflage, Vampiric Rage, Leech, Terrifying Presence, Light Orb, Telekinetic Beam, Accelerated Regeneration, Phantom and Barricade.
You can read some of the flavour off the names:
- Hurting or bending enemies. Pain Orb, Blood Needle, Hypnosis, Blood Subjugation and Terrifying Presence sound like this.
- Not being seen. Dark Camouflage and Phantom sound like this.
- Staying alive. Leech and Accelerated Regeneration sound like this.
What each one does exactly is best discovered in play.
Why are the two trees incompatible?
Three things work together here.
- Your points are limited. You can go deep in one tree, but you cannot finish both. Every point you spend on one side is a point you do not spend on the other.
- Some powers directly conflict with technology. Vampiric Rage is the clearest case. It switches off your shield and your technology, so your guns are unusable under it.
- The story is about a choice. Will you remain human or embrace the dark side? A system that let you take everything would make that question meaningless.
The lore adds a fitting backdrop. The infection is described as a virus that feeds on the boundary between flesh and machine, which is a good fit for a game that makes you choose between the two.
How do the two styles compare?
| Technology | Vampiric | |
|---|---|---|
| Where it comes from | Your suit, weapons and gadgets | The infection in your left arm |
| Tree | Technology tree, 12 abilities | Vampire tree, 14 abilities |
| Examples | Pistol, Rifle, Armour, Spark, Plasma Cannon, Visor | Mark, Pain Orb, Hypnosis, Blood Needle, Dark Camouflage, Vampiric Rage |
| Signature trade | Your shield and guns keep working | Vampiric Rage switches off your technology |
| Theme | Remaining human | Embracing the dark side |

What do you give up with each style?
Every build gives something up, so it helps to know what before you spend points.
- Leaning technology means you hold back from the deeper vampiric powers. Your shield, guns and gadgets stay dependable, but you do not reach the far end of the Vampire tree.
- Leaning vampiric means you accept that your technology will not always be available. Vampiric Rage is the sharpest case, because it switches your shield and guns off.
- Mixing means you split your points. You get variety, but you do not finish either tree.
Which style should you lean on?
Think about what you enjoy most in a VR shooter, then choose a main style:
- Lean technology if handling guns is the best part of VR shooters for you. You get firearms, armour and gadgets, and your shield and weapons stay reliable.
- Lean vampiric if you want powers to be the star. You trade some of your gear for what the infection gives you.
- Mix both if you want flexibility. Expect a cost, because the trees are incompatible, and you will meet that cost at the points where the two conflict.
This guide does not rank the two styles. The aim is that your build says something about who Ron is becoming.
What stays the same whichever you choose?
Your style changes how you fight, not what you are up against. Either way you are on Karna in the year 2583, facing a vampire cult and its powerful shadow masters, along with cultists, androids and mercenaries. Either way every decision pulls you toward remaining human or embracing the dark side.
So think of the two styles as two ways of answering the same situation, not as two different games.
How does this connect to the story?
The two styles are not only a build menu. They are the mechanical half of the game's central question. Every decision you make pulls you toward one side or the other, rewrites the story and decides which powers and allies stand with you.
If you want that side of the game in detail, how choices work in Dixotomia covers it without naming any outcomes.
What should you do first?
Start with the free demo if you are unsure which style appeals to you. It is on Steam and itch.io and shows you the feel of the combat for nothing. When you are choosing upgrades in the full game, ask yourself which arm you want to lean on, and spend with that answer in mind.
Dixotomia is a single-player sci-fi horror shooter from Deep Matrix, and the full game is on the Steam page and on the Meta Quest store.
Frequently asked questions
Can you use guns and vampiric abilities together in Dixotomia?
Yes, you mix and match the two styles. The trees are incompatible, though, so you cannot have everything, and Vampiric Rage disables your technology.
How many abilities are there in Dixotomia?
There are 26 across two trees: 14 in the Vampire tree and 12 in the Technology tree.
Is Dixotomia a vampire game?
It is a sci-fi horror shooter in which you fight a vampire cult. Your own powers come from an infection and are vampiric, but the technology side is just as important: sci-fi guns, a shield and gadgets.
Is the Spark a gun or a power?
The Spark is a weapon. It sits in the Technology tree, not the Vampire tree.
Which playstyle is better in Dixotomia?
This guide does not rank them. The choice is built as a trade-off, and it ties into the question of whether you remain human or embrace the dark side.
